Wilson FFA places second in state By Alan Rusch Last Updated: June 09, 2009 The Czech Capital of Kansas can take pride in many things. That list grew May 29, as the Wilson FFA Chapter placed second in the FFA National Chapter Award Program during the 81st FFA Convention in Manhattan — thus becoming the second best FFA chapter in the Sunflower State. Considering there are 168 FFA chapters in Kansas, this was quite an accomplishment for the 22 member strong chapter. “We’re very excited,” Lindsey Huseman, Wilson FFA advisor, said. “We’ve came a long way in the last three years and we feel really honored that we were selected by the panel to be second best.” For the second year in a row, the Riverton FFA Chapter was awarded the Triple Crown Award, which is given to the FFA chapter that performs best in all the three divisions of the National Chapter Award program. The National Chapter Award program recognizes chapters that actively implement the mission and strategies of the organization in the three divisions of student development, chapter development and community development. The Fredonia FFA finished third. As Triple Crown Award winner, the Riverton FFA Chapter received $300 and the Bob Garlow memorial traveling trophy, which is sponsored by the Bill Garlow Family in memory of past Kansas FFA officer Bob Garlow. Huseman said the Wilson FFA Chapter will apply again next year for the prestigious Triple Crown Award. “I think a lot of the students are excited with the thought of being able to improve to first place,” she said. “It will be challenging, but I think our goal is to stay in the top percentage.” Wilson’s application will now be forwarded to the national level, where they will compete in October at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. “We will receive an award for being in the top 10 percent of the country,” Huseman said. “But we will also find out how we are ranked at the national level. They will assign either a three star, a two star or a one star rating, with three being the best.” That list grew May 29, as the Wilson FFA Chapter placed second in the FFA National Chapter Award Program during the 81st FFA Convention in Manhattan — thus becoming the second best FFA chapter in the Sunflower State.
