| QHHS parking lot work approved Last Updated: June 09, 2009 Parking lot issues at Quivira Heights High School in Bushton were resolved during Monday’s meeting of the Lorraine-based USD 328 Board of Education. “I believe you don’t have a serious problem,” said J.W. Antrim of Stripe and Seal in Hays after he examined the parking lot. He recommended using a rubber material known as “Alasto Patch” on the areas of the lot which were cracked. “This stuff will crack eventually, but it’s cheaper than tearing out the parking lot,” Antrim said. “Your base is still good. This material will work. We just need to stop the water from going down in there.” Antrim submitted a $7,048 bid to fill the cracks and repair an area with pot holes. He also submitted bids of $4,536 to seal coat and restripe the parking lot and $1,886.40 to repair the two entrances to the parking lot. Antrim also submitted a $38,000 bid to completely cover the entire parking lot with a two-inch seal coating. “The cheapest route is the best,” Antrim said. “Anybody can do it, but we do it right.” “It’s good to hear the least expensive option is the best,” board president Scott Rolfs said. The board approved Antrim’s first three bids totalling $13,470.40. In other business: • Steve Woolf was hired as the principal at Quivira Heights Elementary and Junior High School in Holyrood for the 2009-2010 school year. • The 2009-2010 negotiated agreement was approved. • The 2009-2010 supplemental contracts were approved. • The consensus of the board was to gather more information on what other districts are charging for food service before changes are considered for the 2009-2010 food service prices. “We’re losing money,” Superintendent Lenny Gales said. “So we need to do something.” • Before the 2009-2010 student handbook was approved, a minor change was made to the first period tardy policy. The change dealt with determining whether the tardy is excused or not excused. “It’s not a major problem,” Gales said. • The board examined plans Wilson Communications has to tie into the existing fiber optic cable at Wilson School and extend the cable from the east side of the playground underneath the playground as part of providing fiber optic cable to the area. The plan would save Wilson Communications from having to lay the fiber optic cable around the perimeter of the school. After their review, the consensus of the board was to have the plan reviewed by John Sherman, board attorney, before approval is given. • A change of wording was approved in the nomination section of the USD 328 Hall of Fame policy. Nominations may now be received until Sept. 1. • The board granted Gales authority to pursue the purchase of a used Chevrolet Suburban sport utility vehicle and trade in one of the district’s high mileage vehicles. • No action was taken after a 30-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. The next meeting of the Lorraine-based USD 328 Board of Education will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 13, at the district office.
