Holyrood Council hears building request
By Mark McCoy
Last Updated: August 20, 2009

The Ellsworth County Historical Society may have a building in Holyrood.

Keith Ryan addressed the city council concerning the Wesley house on the southeast corner of Concord and Charles streets. The limestone house is owned by three siblings that live out of the area and Ryan has been working to have it donated to the society.

“I wanted the city to be aware of it," Ryan said. “This was the first of several meetings that I plan to attend this week about this."

Ryan asked that Holyrood mow the property. He also asked that the water, sewer and electricity be donated.

Ryan has approached the churches of Holyrood about keeping their historical records in the building to facilitate public access. He would like to see each of the churches have a room in the house.

Ryan also asked the city to consider making a video about the history of Holyrood.

“I haven't been to the historical society meeting yet as their meeting is Thursday. I came here first since this is your meeting night," Ryan said. “The historical society has 14 buildings but nothing here in Holyrood."

“So they know that this is coming?" asked mayor Rob Koch.

“Oh yes," replied Ryan. “I have already got the appraisal of the place from Frank Princ."

The water is off to the house but the electricity is still hooked up.

Koch asked maintenance supervisor Randy Zajic to add the building to the properties that the city currently  mows.

“It wouldn't take five minutes to mow it with our mower," Zajic said.

Council member Ken Schepmann asked that a time limit be added to the request so that the council could review the cost at a later date.

The council approved the motion to cut the grass and donate the utilities to the building for the rest of the year.
