Ellsworth's goose neck light poles started coming down Monday morning as workers prepared to begin a streetscape project that will add period lights, trees and other amenities to the downtown.

“It's really exciting to see what can happen when a group of dedicated downtown businesses get together and have a dream," said Dave Brownback, leader of the downtown streetscape task force, which spearheaded the almost $1 million project.

Brownback spoke at a short groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the project.

He was joined by about two dozen others, including Chad Jantz, vice president of Heartstone, Inc. of Wichita, general contractors.

Jantz joked that Ellsworth has come a long way since it was known as the “wickedest cowtown in the west." He praised the community for its civility and enthusiasm.

“We're excited to be here," Jantz said.

The project started in front of Lonnie Soukup's insurance office. Jantz said work will continue to the north on the west side of North Douglas Avenue.

Parking stalls in the construction area will be off limits during the day, Jantz said, however, they will be reopened weekends and during the Sept. 26 Cowtown Festival/National Drovers Hall of Fame Association activities.

Pedestrian access will be from the end and perhaps the middle of the blocks.

“For our part, we want to minimize the disruption," Jantz said.

There was a Jerry Jantz that I went through school with in the 60's at Ellsworth, is this Wichita contractor related?

wasted money could have spent wisely on the streets. concrete has been there for many years and hasnt failed yet, now we fix something that isnt broke. seems like city council has no regard for what is important to city or people living in it.
