Downtown task force moves forward
Last Updated: October 14, 2009

The sometimes shaky plywood boards on the sidewalk along North Douglas Avenue will be replaced, Tom White, who works for contractor Heartstone, Inc., told members of the downtown Ellsworth streetscape task force Tuesday afternoon.

Task force chairman Dave Brownback raised the issue, saying the boards “need some attention."

City administrator Tim Vandall also asked about wheelchair access to the construction area.

White said the boards, which cover places where sidewalk has been removed for the streetscape project, will be braced to make them more stable. He said workers also would do their best with the issue of wheelchairs.

At the hour-long meeting, task force members discussed the brick drive, which resulted in more than 300 personalized bricks being purchased at $50 apiece. Task force members postponed a decision on which bricks — the red or the blonde — they want to use. White said he would provide the committee with examples as soon as possible.

Nick Slechta, director of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce, provided samples of banners the organization plans to purchase for the new downtown light poles. Cost is expected to be about $3,500.

White said workers hope to start laying sidewalk bricks next week on the west side of Douglas Avenue.

Because they're custom made, the cast iron light poles that are part of the project aren't expected to arrive until mid to late December.
“It's not an off-the-shelf-kind-of-thing," architect Bill Morris said.

The next meeting of the task force is tentatively set for 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Village Mall.
