Ask about the history of the Ellsworth County Medical Center Auxiliary's annual Spaghetti Supper and almost everyone mentions the tomatoes.

It was two decades ago, the first year for the event, and Dr. Dennis Kepka issued a call for tomatoes for his Italian red sauce.

“We had all kinds of tomatoes, every kind but the kind he said he wanted to have," said Jean Pflughoeft, a long-time auxiliary member.

Despite the variety of tomato donations, Dr. Kepka and the auxiliary members produced enough sauce to fill about a half-dozen cookers.

Now, as auxiliary members prepare for the supper's 20th anniversary, Kepka and his crew will prepare almost a dozen cookers of sauce.

This year's Spaghetti Supper and Bake Sale is Friday, Nov. 6, at Ellsworth's American Legion building.

Proceeds will go to buy equipment or fill other needs at the medical center. Previous projects have included the furnishing of a room in the new outpatient wing and emergency room equipment.

“Any place they've needed things, we've tried to help," Pflughoeft said.
