School district to meet Dec. 2 with Claflin

A Dec. 2 meeting with members of the Claflin USD 354 Board of Education to listen and gather more information on possible consolidation was approved Monday at the monthly meeting of the Lorraine-based USD 328 Board of Education.

The 7 p.m. meeting in Claflin will be moderated by Donna Whiteman, an attorney with the Kansas Association of School Boards.

“If it's information only, I'm for it," board member Malcolm Shaw said. “We need to have our ears open and listen. We need to leave personal comments out and just listen."

Board president Alan Siemer suggested a small number of community patrons be chosen by the board to represent the district. The meeting is open to the public.

“I think that's a good idea," Shaw said. “They could come back and quiet the rumors."

Superintendent Lenny Gales suggested each board member choose a person from their community. Two will be chosen to represent Holyrood and Lorraine, two will be chosen to represent Wilson and Dorrance and two will be chosen to represent Bushton.

“Hopefully we can get all the communities represented," Siemer said.

A recess meeting is planned by the board for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at the Quivira Heights High School library to select the community members to attend the Dec. 2 meeting.

“The two school boards and the community members will hear the same message," Siemer said. “Information is only what we desire."

I find it amazing that the Wilson and Dorrance represent more than half the district population but will only have one third of the representation at this meeting.

USD 328 does not have to consolidate with anyone. They have more dollars in the capital outlay and contingency funds that all surrounding districts combined. I do not know why they would be seeking out Claflin. It sounds like it should be the other way around.

Ellsworth had better start talking with the surrounding districts before we get left out in the cold
