Ellsworth boys rescued from train car
Two five-year-old Ellsworth boys were rescued from the inside of a coal car July 28 on the rairoad tracks in Ellsworth. No injuries were reported.

Roy J. Wallert
(1932-2009)

Roy J. Wallert, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Kay Pogue Hospice Center, Salina.

He was born Jan. 16, 1932, in Wilson to Elmer and Violet Smith Wallert. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth, he was a carrier and clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Roy was a member of the St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 6485 and American Legion Post 174, all of Ellsworth.  

On Feb. 18, 1951, he married Ramona (Monie)  Kueser in Ellsworth. She survives.

Other survivors include daughters Roxie Little, Baldwin City, Kristi Stallo and husband Joel, Glastonbury, Ct., Kim Leavell, Ellsworth, Lori Ranker, Topeka and Teresa Thompson and husband Pat, El Dorado;  half-brother, Gerald Anschutz, Remer, Mn., half-sister, Gayle Michel, Burbank, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.    
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with a vigil service and time of sharing with family at 6 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Ellsworth.  Burial will follow in the Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials may be made to Roy Wallert Memorial Baseball Fund or Morrison House, Salina, in care of Parsons Funeral Home, P.O. Box 45, Ellsworth, Kan. 67439.

    I played American Legion baseball for Mr. Wallert in the late 60's. A great coach, and a great person. He will be missed.
