Ellsworth boys rescued from train car
Two five-year-old Ellsworth boys were rescued from the inside of a coal car July 28 on the rairoad tracks in Ellsworth. No injuries were reported.

Wilson celebrates its 50th annual festival this year. The festival continues Saturday, July 30, and include a large parade and many other activities.



 

Traffic was light Tuesday morning in downtown Ellsworth. In the background is the playground at Ellsworth Elementary School, which was closed by a winter storm that moved into Ellsworth County Monday night.

Winter storm settles in Ellsworth County

The first major snowstorm of the season shut down schools Tuesday across Ellsworth County and the area.

At 7 a.m., snowfall reports of from 2.5 to almost 4 inches were received from east of Ellsworth and southwest of Kanopolis. More snow continued to fall throughout the morning.

Travel also was dangerous, as roads became snowpacked and icy in spots.

A winter storm warning was in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Here is the forecast from the National Weather Service at Wichita:

Tuesday — Snow. Areas of blowing snow in the afternoon. Snow may be heavy at times. Snow accumulation around 5 inches. Highs in the mid 20s. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

Tuesday night — Mostly cloudy. A 80 percent chance of snow in the evening. Areas of blowing snow through the night. Windy. Snow accumulation less than an inch. Total snow accumulation 6 to 7 inches. Lows near 5 above. Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to around 35 mph. Lowest wind chills around 17 below.

Wednesday — Mostly sunny. Breezy
- colder. Highs 10 to 15. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around 30 mph becoming west 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Lowest wind chills around 16 below.

Wednesday night — Partly cloudy. Lows zero to 5 below. West winds 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday — Mostly sunny. Highs 20 to 25. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Lowest wind chills around 19 below in the morning.

Thursday night and Friday — Partly cloudy. Lows near 5 above. Highs 30 to 35.

Friday night and Saturday — Partly cloudy. Lows 15 to 20. Highs 30 to 35.

Saturday night and Sunday — Partly cloudy. Lows 10 to 15. Highs in the mid 30s.

Sunday night — Partly cloudy. Lows near 20.

Monday — Partly sunny. Highs in the mid 30s.
