Saturday, Dec. 12,  the Czech Capital of Kansas will ring in the Christmas season as the Wilson Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Christmas Festival in the practice gymnasium at Wilson School.

“We're all very excited," said Lorie Taylor, chamber member.

In years past the event was at the Wilson Czech Opera House. The location has been changed this year because of the tragic Nov. 6 fire which claimed the historic Opera House.

“It's sad we had to change the location for the Christmas Festival," Taylor said. “The atmosphere at the Opera House was so cheerful."

She hopes the new venue will be just as cheerful.

“We're just glad to still be able to do this," she said. “It's great for this community to pull together and keep Wilson alive."

The Christmas Festival begins at noon with a sloppy joe meal being served.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children, and includes chips, dessert and a drink.

From noon to 3 p.m., numerous tables of arts and crafts, baked goods and novelty gifts for Christmas will be available for purchase.

“We've got more than we had last year," Taylor noted.

There is no cost for those selling items at the event. Those interested in having a craft or bake sale booth can call the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, (785) 658-2211, for more information.

At 2:45 p.m., that jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus, will arrive at the gym the way he has in the past — aboard a Wilson Fire Department fire engine. After they visit with Santa, youngsters will be given bags of goodies.

At 3 p.m., the children's movie “A Muppet Christmas: Letters to Santa" will be shown.
