Ellsworth boys rescued from train car

Two five-year-old Ellsworth boys were rescued from the inside of a coal car on the railroad tracks in Ellsworth July 28, after law enforcement and firefighters were summoned to the scene.
According to Ellsworth Police Chief Dave Smith, the boys were being taken care of by relatives. At 8:09 p.m., when one relative didn't see the boys playing in the backyard of the residence, a search began and police were called. At the same time, a man living across the street from the railroad tracks heard the boys calling for help.

Bob Kepka, Ellsworth fire chief, said the slick inside walls of the coal car made it impossible for the boys to climb out, so once law enforcement and firefighters arrived, a roof ladder was used to extract them.

No injuries were reported.

Sir you are our HERO!!!!! Words can never express the exteme graditude we will always have for you and your quick thinking. Both families were out franticly searching the neighborhood and had not thought about the train,5 blocks away. Without you being in the right place at the right time and taking your time (on a very warm evening) to follow your instincts, this story could of had a tragic ending. I have never met you, but with your permission, want to very much and thank you personally. I also think it is important for the "fellows" to be able to show you their gratitude. Many things happened in a very short period of time and we will always be greatful to the ANGEL who listened to their cries for help. Both of the boys have learned a very important lesson. Thank you to all departments who had a part in the rescue. God Bless.

How many of us hear children, yelling and assume they are just playing. Thank god their neighbor Tony Mendez checked it out and responded quickly. In this heat it doesn't take long to lose a child. He saved these boys and is a hero.
Thanks to all involved in this rescue!
