Pre-Summer JOYCE KRAUS Saturday June 19, 2010
In December we sing “I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" while we are cozy and warm by the fireplace writing Christmas cards. Today is the opposite. It is June 19th. I'm inside, but not too cozy with the air conditioner and ceiling fan both on, waiting for an inspiration to write a blog in this space.
I set some dough earlier today, and just took the communion bread for tomorrow out of the oven; smells good in here. Tonight's supper just came out too. It's a concoction of ingredients I had in the kitchen. Supper looks and smells pretty good too! It is homemade bread with a mixture of cubed chicken, spaghetti sauce, and mozzarella cheese baked inside like a Stromboli, or a LARGE bierock! Can't wait to cut into it! We'll have some of Gary's cousin's fresh-picked spinach with it, and for dessert some of yesterday's mulberry upside-down-cake made with mulberries from a tree at the farm.
Speaking of fruit trees, we have an apple tree in our back yard that yields small yellowish-green apples every year at wheat-harvest time. We didn't plant the tree, so I don't know what kind it is. I used to think they were Granny Smith apples, but maybe not. Whatever, they have made good apple pies or apple crisp. One year we got more than 15 gallons of little apples off this dwarf tree. Ugh. I don't want to sound ungrateful, but the apples are small. After giving family and neighbors some, and after making a few desserts, I usually make applesauce in the crock pot and then can them. My family likes applesauce or apple butter made with red Jello or cinnamon red hots. I'm getting hungry for some apple cake! Maybe I better go out and pick some apples. It's harvest time. I'll have people to feed. It's hot. Oh, well....
